When Is The Law Not The Law
So let me get this straight. I am involved in a physical altercation where I punch someone out, breaking his jaw in the process. As long as I pay for any and all damages to the person, such as dental work, physical therapy, and psychiatric work, the district attorney will not press charges for assault and battery?
Isn’t this precisely what Krishna Abrams, the Solano County District Attorney, did with Steve Bird, your mayor after he committed a “hit and run with property damage” over at the train station parking lot last September? What was Abrams lack of interest in this violation of the law and her recusal from the case truly about?
Did she not go after Bird because he “put up campaign signs” for Abrams during her campaign? Didn’t realize that was a get out of jail free card either. This is yet another example of “bad ol’ boy” politics where those who know those in power get to skate.
While I was not even slightly surprised that the now defunct Dixon Tribune wouldn’t report real news, let alone write a cogent editorial on the subject, I was also not disappointed by the feckless approach of our remaining print newspaper, the Indefensible Void (IV) and its pseudo-journalist Debra Dingman in not taking the opportunity to turn the table on Steve Bird, one of the principle persecutors of her son, Devon, when he was on the council. That might have something to do with the eunuch publisher of the IV who puts ad revenues above informing the public.
I believe some in town have suggested that Bird resign over this. After all, Steve was a police officer in Dixon for 30 years so you would think he would know the law. I am not buying his story that he “didn’t feel the contact” when his truck hit the Tesla. Maybe you had the radio up too loud.
It is also interesting that it took the police, or in this case the CHP, three days to cite Bird. It is also interesting that the CHP wouldn’t release any of their findings to anyone in the press. It isn’t an ongoing investigation once charges have been filed. Some have suggested that Bird was intoxicated. How would you know three days after the fact?
When Dan Supriano was on the council, he also was asked to resign over allegations by the owner of the Arco station in town that he had stolen money from locked gas kiosks to which he had no key. The DA at the time, Dave Paulson, didn’t have a problem bringing charges against Supriano, who like Pacheco and Moreno had a last name not associated with the bad old boy network.
Am I suggesting that Steve Bird resign or that criminal charges should be prosecuted? No one is above the law, right? Unlike others who have been accused of breaking a law when no real evidence exists to validate that allegation, Bird did in fact break the law and was cited. Resignation is Bird’s prerogative but not a requirement.
Embarrassment and loss of credibility should be enough. Wasn’t it Bird who went along with the city attorney, Doug White, when White stated that then chief of police, Jon Cox, shouldn’t be allowed to remain as chief because his testimony was no longer credible in court given his alleged conduct outside of work concerning his medical disability? The sword cuts both ways.
Again, all of this reflects poorly on the justice system of Solano County, where rarely do the courts make decisions based on facts rather than what political or personal standing the accused has within our community and county.
The Chicago political machine would be soooo proud …
