I have called for the termination of the public school system in Dixon. I have attended school board meetings in Vacaville, Fairfield, and Dixon and see no hope for the government run bureaucracy essentially run for the benefit of administrators, staff and the teachers’ union which is transfixed on destroying the nuclear family plus indoctrination of a Marxist agenda, which is much the same as seen in local government councils throughout California. As one councilman in Dixon recently retorted, “what would you do? Eliminate permits, licenses, and government?”. The easily justifiable answer is a resounding “YES!!!”
So, you want a justification? I will save the city government for another day. Let’s look at our failing educational system to give you your “why”. At the last school board meeting, superintendent Brian Dolan referenced “product” during one of his responses to the board. Exactly what does the taxpayer, let alone the parent who by the way doesn’t bother to ever even attend a meeting, get for his and her dollars?
Sure, we have the outstanding student who manages to excel despite the system which fails to educate the vast majority of our students. Look at test scores, unless you are part of the problem who accepts the liberal mantra that test scores don’t really show students’ knowledge.
Don’t tell me that the decline was because of Covid restrictions, which your teacher unions endorsed, and which were forced on us by liberal maniacs in the name of their panic-demic designed to place their anointed ones in office. The kids weren’t performing well before the plot unfolded. Yet home-schooled kids did just fine because nothing much changed. Thanks to the idiots running this State, and our school systems, children are way behind in performance.
Rather than talk in abstracts, let’s look at governance at the local level. The bon mot of expecting different results from doing the same thing is the definition of insanity has been demonstrated.
Our new school board consists of a motley crew. The bright spots are Julian Cuevas and the recently appointed Regina Espinosa. Board president David Bowen has proven to be responsive to a point but, as can be expected from a person who is a teacher, is indoctrinated into an educational political structure of supporting staff and administration and their direction rather than questioning anything. Bowen’s demeanor at meetings is atypical of the normal board member as he is way too happy. I will not speculate as to the reason.
The other two board members are interesting as one is elderly and the other middle aged but both are status quo bad old boys who will always support the system. Considering Jewel Fink was involved with the Vallejo School District, I would suggest someone provide me with documentation of exceptional performances occurring during her tenure. What exactly did she bring from her experience and what has changed in Dixon because of it? Zero.
All I can say about John Gabby is he doesn’t even have the courtesy to speak into his microphone so the public, let alone the audience, can hear his solutions to the morass he supposedly oversees. Typical of his allegiances, he quickly switched his support for pushing for an actual recruitment process for the permanent principal position at the new John Knight Middle School and backing Cuevas and Espinoza to his usual whatever administration wants is good enough for me. I have to wonder if his only reason for being on this board is medical benefits as I have been told this was his need in the past.
So, what did we see at the past two meetings with Dolan attempting to ramrod his yes man, Bob Bugalski, into the position? First, we saw Dolan absolutely livid with Cuevas and crew for challenging his authority and requiring him to take applications. The next meeting, after the “process” championed by Cuevas failed, Dolan was completely passive because his aggressiveness was no longer required. Unfortunately, either Cuevas and Espinoza didn’t think of it but they didn’t order Dolan to extend the application period. It’s done all the time, folks. I suggested it but, as usual, it fell on deaf ears. So much for even one board member listening to the public, let alone telling the public why it was a bad idea.
With Dolan appointing the committee to review the one applicant, who was Bugalski, to what conclusion do you really think Dolan’s yes men would come? And you wonder why change never occurs? Considering Dolan was bragging about his 26 years in the school system, a system going nowhere fast, he should be careful of pointing at his leadership which hasn’t produced much of a product over those years.
This one incident is demonstrative of much larger issues destroying our educational system and the lives of those who participate in it. You have Critical Race Theory (CRT) being introduced through various channels such as social emotional learning which is also the basis for mental health application to further the LGBTQ agenda. If you think I am off base, I will ask you to research Assembly Bill 665 which will allow 12 year olds to ascertain their mental condition in order to avoid parental control counter to the indoctrination they are receiving in our public schools.
Let’s not stop there. We have AB 957 (removal of a child from parents who are unwilling to confirm sexual identity as child abuse) and AB 1078 (book banning if not teaching diversity). Again, we have a public school system which thinks these kids belong to them.
Schools are not where a child should decide his sexual identity. That belongs in psychiatric sessions with parents present or at home. I remember many a time my parents wouldn’t let me do what I wanted to do. Why do we think allowing teachers and staff to promote the gay agenda is some sort of higher education or even productive?
Book banning is part of the CRT agenda and cancel culture silencing movement. If we have a white supremacist culture, how do we gain from becoming a black supremacist culture or even multi-racial one? Are Mark Levin’s books in the school library? What about other conservative authors including Thomas Sowell? Do we teach the economics of Hayek and hard money economists? If you can teach robotics and movie making, why can’t you teach advanced courses in subjects which actually affect your children’s, as well as your own, lives?
What is really important to Dolan is not important to parents who want their children educated. Who cares if the school has a principal or vice principal? Throughout my years of public education, I never interacted with either in the classroom and only rarely outside of it. When you tell me you have 10 teacher positions which you can’t fill, that means you are impacting with larger class size the teachers you have. Didn’t hear a peep from a trustee. Just let the superintendent handle it in his own good time.
I know where this district is going. The incestuous relationships of Dixon exist throughout this community. Nick Girimonte will be the next superintendent. The district will muddle on with no changes because the teachers’ union resists change. The Board will have more of the who’s not of Dixon elected, so they can retain this failing structure.
I welcome the expansion of the Catholic parochial school system in Dixon. The only way to get the attention of overpaid bureaucrats is to impact their finances. We need more charter schools such as Buckingham in Vacaville.
It’s time to put the failures out of business and provide a viable alternative. This is why school vouchers are such a good idea. You either produce or the taxpayer parent takes his or her money with them to another venue.
